Caste-based discrimination 'could exist in British workplaces'

A government peer has called for more research to be done into caste-based discrimination after finding that it may be prevalent in UK workplaces.

Baroness Glenys Thornton said that even second generation UK Asian workers could be discriminating against colleagues who are viewed as of a lower caste, the so-called "untouchables" in Hindu and Sikh communities.

The House of Lords has now accepted an amendment to the Equality Bill which could see such discrimination becoming illegal under employment law if the research finds evidence of it in British workplaces.

National Secular Society spokesperson Keith Porteous Wood said he was pleased with Baroness Thornton's announcement and that he hopes it will eliminate prejudice on the basis of caste in the workplace.

"The blight of caste discrimination … has spread to this country virtually unnoticed," he added.

It is already unlawful to be discriminated against at work based on race, colour and ethnic background and anyone who feels they have been the victim of this should seek the advice of a solicitor specialising in employment law.
