Concerns raised over hospital performance assessment

Hospital ward
Concerns have been raised over potential clinical negligence issues after it was revealed that hospitals are innacurately assessing their own performance.

A documentary for BBC's Panorama discovered that hospitals are being allowed to rate their own achievements in factors such as patient care.

However, when the Care Quality Commission carried out spot-checks on 28 institutions, it found that 17 had wrongly rated their own performance.

Two had misreported their achievements in three out of four categories, which has led to claims that hospitals are deliberately misleading the public.

Professor Brian Jarman of NHS analyst Dr Foster Intelligence said: "My view is that patients do not realise that hospitals are self-assessing. I could hardly believe it until I read it."

Civitas recently warned that NHS overspending is likely to result in hospital cutbacks that could seriously affect patients, with some institutions considering cutting back on accident and emergency provisions and the number of operations performed.
