Diabetic man receives compensation after Taser incident |

| It has been revealed that a man in the UK became the first person to be compensated for being injured with a Taser when he received a payout from West Yorkshire Police. Nicholas Gaubert, a diabetic, had caught a bus from Leeds city centre to Headingley in July 2006 when he fell into a hypoglycaemic coma, the Daily Mail reports. He was the last person left on the bus when it pulled into the depot, but the driver did not realise his predicament and feared he was a terrorist. When the police came and he did not respond to their shouted instructions, they shot him twice with a Taser gun. Mr Gaubert regained consciousness in the back of the van and was able to raise the alert that he needed medical attention, but he pointed out that the outcome could have been much worse. "They would have put me in a cell and I would probably have died," he said. The victim launched a personal injury compensation claim against West Yorkshire Police and the Daily Mail states that he received a six-figure payout and a formal apology. Tasers are used by police to detain criminals as an alternative to firearms, but their use has been controversial following a number of injuries and deaths in the US and Canada. ![]() |
