East Yorkshire patients could be at risk from lack of hospital beds

NHS patients in east Yorkshire could be at risk of clinical negligence due to a lack of hospital beds.
NHS patients in east Yorkshire could be at risk of clinical negligence due to a lack of hospital beds, it has been revealed.

Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust told the Hull Daily Mail that a sudden increase of people suffering from norovirus - the winter vomiting bug - has left staff struggling to find places to put new admissions and is heaping pressure on the A&E department.

It said that some 2,000 people were admitted to casualty in the last week of February and urged anyone whose symptoms are not serious to see their GP instead in order to leave beds free for seriously ill patients.

Dr David Hepburn, medical director at the trust, commented: "The rise in the number of people attending hospital, combined with the issue of ward closures due to infections … is putting a significant amount of pressure on our ability to find beds for patients."

In August last year, junior doctors in hospitals had their working hours cut to a maximum of 48 a week under the European Working Time Directive, which medical experts said could be pressurising A&E departments and increasing the risk of clinical negligence.
