HSE crackdown aims to prevent personal injury in construction |

| The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has announced a major crackdown on construction sites which are found to be flouting safety regulations. New statistics have been released by the organisation which showed that there were 11,264 injuries and 53 deaths in the sector in 2008-09, making construction one of the UK's most dangerous trades to work in. Despite this, HSE chief inspector Philip White pointed out that many accidents which cause personal injury are avoidable. Consequently, HSE staff will soon be making random visits to building sites around the UK, making sure that safety is being managed properly, particularly when it comes to roofing or refurbishing work. "Each year too many construction workers are needlessly injured or killed while working on site we are really concerned about standards in the refurbishment sector," Mr White said. He added that prosecutions will be made where companies are found to be putting the lives of its workers at risk. Statistics from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents reveal that employers could prevent 70 per cent of workplace accidents by putting better safety control measures into effect. ![]() |
