HSE urges farmers to stay safe after new personal injury figures

Someone in the agricultural sector dies every week in the UK, new personal injury figures have revealed.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned those in the agricultural industry to make sure they adhere to safety legislations after new personal injury figures were released.

Despite previous warning campaigns, there were still 589 major injuries in farming accidents in 2008-09, which resulted in 26 employees being killed.

Most of these fatalities were caused by people being hit by moving or falling objects, or by workers falling from height. Farm vehicles were also highlighted as a major hazard.

HSE inspector Peter Hamer said that someone in the agricultural sector dies every week in the UK, which is an alarming trend.

"These deaths are needless and most could be prevented by taking simple steps to improve safety … We need to make sure farmers are doing everything they can to stay safe," he added.

A new Shattered Lives campaign was also recently launched by the HSE, which aims to reduce the number of people affected by slips, trips and falls in the workplace.
