Independent advice 'essential' for divorcing couples |
![]() |
| Seeking the counsel of a solicitor specialising in family law should be viewed as essential for couples in the process of separating. This is the advice of Christina Tait, founder of information website DivorceAid.co.uk, who was speaking to the Express in response to recent figures from the Office for National Statistics. These stated that although the number of divorces in the UK fell last year, separations among women aged 50-55 and men over 60 increased. Ms Tait pointed out that older couples may have individual assets such as pensions which are worth more than their joint assets, so a divorce lawyer could be vital in ensuring that they are divided up fairly. "Divorce is easy but it's finances that take the work," she added. The DivorceAid.co.uk website also stresses that there is "no substitute" for the professional advice of a solicitor, as this is likely to be the only place where couples can get impartial advice without an emotional attachment. ![]() |
