Man claims compensation from council for housing ordeal |
![]() |
| A man who claims he was treated badly while on a waiting list for a home is seeking compensation. Haval Mohammed, 19, came from Syria to the UK as an asylum seeker in 2007 and moved to Kirklees before being put into temporary accommodation in Heckmondwike's Thomas Street, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports. However, he claims that the house was mouldy and damp and that the roof leaked. Mr Mohammed was eventually told he could move into a "priority need" home in Dewsbury after being granted asylum, but on the day he was supposed to move in, Kirklees Council retracted its agreement and put him back into the Thomas Street House. The teenager said that the six further months he spent there caused him "distress, anxiety and mental anguish". He is now to take his case to the Court of Appeal in a bid to claim compensation for his ordeal. According to Shelter, local councils are legally responsible for providing good-quality accommodation to certain groups of people, although this depends on individual circumstances. ![]() |
