National database aims to cut risk of clinical negligence |

| The government is considering plans which would see a national database set up to record all complaints about GPs and other health professionals. According to healthcare industry magazine Pulse, the proposals would allow the government to collate and electronically share details including informal concerns, formal complaints and comments from colleagues regarding health professionals. It is hoped that such details would flag up incidents where the conduct of a person or group of people could be a risk to patient safety and therefore cut down on the risk of a compensation claim for clinical negligence. Health minister Ann Keen told the publication that every possible safeguard will be put in place to guard against mistakenly tarnishing the reputations of innocent health professionals. "Our overriding priority is to ensure that patients and the public are protected," she added. In September 2009, the Imperial Centre for Patient Safety and Service Quality at Imperial College London found that one-sixth of patients approaching the NHS for treatment are becoming the victim of a misdiagnosis due to carelessness or a lack of training. ![]() |
