New employment law 'would see civil servants lose thousands'

Civil servants are at risk of losing thousands of pounds in redundancy pay if new payout caps come into effect in April.

This is the claim of thousands of government employees who are preparing to strike on Monday and Tuesday (March 8th and 9th 2010) against the proposed reforms.

The new employment law would see an upper limit placed on redundancy and early retirement payoffs, but union leaders say they are illegal and could cost employees up to £20,000.

Mark Serwotka, chairman of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), said the reforms are "more about crude politicking than making savings".

Tessa Jowell said she is "disappointed" with the decision to strike and has insisted that the cuts would put civil servants' redundancy pay in line with that of other staff.

PCS is the fifth largest trade union in the UK and represents 270,000 tax employees, driving test instructors and other civil servants.
