New training employment law missed by businesses

As of April 6th 2010, business owners who employ more than 250 people will be required to give their staff the right to request time off for training or study, with the legislation set to be extended to firms of all sizes by 2011.

It will apply to employees who have 26 weeks of continuous service and they must be able to prove that the time off will improve their business performance.

However, a study carried out for XpertHR, cited by Personnel Today, shows that more than one in five employers are unaware of the new legislation, potentially putting them at risk of breaking the law.

Despite this, XpertHR spokesperson Charlotte Wolff said it should not affect businesses too much.

"Employers will be able to get round this by demonstrating a good business reason for refusal," she pointed out.

Under the new law, employers must meet with the employee who has submitted the request within 28 weeks in order to discuss it.
