Pensions 'are the most important work-related perk'

Saving for a pension
A pension is the best employee benefit that businesses can offer apart from a good salary, it has been found.

Research carried out by the National Association of Pensions Funds (NAPF) found that four out of ten workers said they think pensions are the most important work-related perk, compared to the 19 per cent who cited bonuses.

However, a large proportion of people said they are concerned about how well their pension will be able to support them later in life, with 38 per cent worrying that it will not last their full lifetime after retirement.

NAPF director of policy Nigel Peaple said: "It is clear that people greatly value pensions. More than three-quarters value an employer more if they offer a workplace pension."

As the UK's population ages, employees could find that they need to work past the current state retirement age. Indeed, Prudential recently estimated that 1.8 million people will be doing so by 2019.
