South Yorkshire organisations prosecuted after fatal personal injury |

| Two organisations from south Yorkshire have been prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after an incident in which a worker suffered a fatal personal injury. Gordon Duffield, who worked for Rotherham Council, was killed by a truck which was reversing as it delivered asphalt to a building site in May 2007. A subsequent HSE investigation discovered that moving vehicles onsite were not properly controlled and CCTV had not been fitted to eliminate blind spots. Furthermore, Mr Duffield's employer had allowed him to continue working on the roads, despite the fact that he was partially deaf. HSE inspector John Rowe said: "Mr Duffield's death demonstrates all too clearly the need for the movement of workplace vehicles to be carefully managed so that employees and other pedestrians are not put at risk." Rotherham Council has now been fined £75,000 under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, while its subcontractor Brocklebank & Company (Demolition) was also prosecuted for breaching the same legislation. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, there are 1.6 million workplace injuries in the UK every year. Some 60 per cent of fatal injuries occur in the construction, transport, storage, agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors. ![]() |
