Toilet breaks 'should form part of employment law' |
![]() |
| Regular toilet breaks should be permitted in order for employees to experience a safe and healthy working environment. This is the conclusion of the Give Us a (Loo) Break report by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), which found that some businesses are docking the pay of staff who use the toilet during work time. Meanwhile, others are forcing employees to put their hands up and request permission if they need to use the toilet. The TUC warned that not being permitted to go when necessary could cause serious health problems and urged employers not to allow a culture to develop in which going to the toilet during the working day is frowned upon. "[Employers] should trust staff and let them take a few minutes away from their work if they need to go. Dickensian attitudes to toilet breaks have no place in the modern workplace," said TUC deputy general secretary Frances O'Grady. This comes after a construction firm in Bridlington was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive for not providing any toilet facilities for its staff on a building site, which amounted to an unhygienic and potentially unsafe working environment. ![]() |
