Woman succeeds in claim for compensation after death crash |

| A woman has successfully claimed compensation after her husband and one of her children were killed by a driver from Pontefract. Steve Pethig, 27, and Billy Pethig, seven, had been standing at the side of a road near Rochester after their car broke down in December 2005, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports. However, they were struck by a Rover being driven by Alan Oliver. Mr Pethig died at the scene of the crash and Billy died later in hospital. Mr Oliver was found to be driving without insurance and was sentenced to nine years' imprisonment for causing death by dangerous driving. Kerry Pethig decided to take legal action against Mr Oliver via the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) and has this week been awarded £425,000 in compensation. Mr Justice Burnett described the claim for compensation as "entirely appropriate" under the circumstances and wished the family well for the future. The MIB was established in 1946 to provide compensation for the victims of negligent uninsured and untraceable motorists.  |
